The chief was famously a strong ally of the United States, and helped keep the peace between settlers and his people. In 1861, a settler named John Paul discovered large clay pits on the northwestern edge of town, and started Red Wing’s booming pottery and stoneware industry. In addition to clay, Red Wing led the country in wheat sold by farmers, and warehouses that could store over one million bushels of wheat were built in town. After decades of prosper, The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Red Wing to the distinctive destinations list, an honor given to only 12 communities nationally per year.
