The area that would become Mendota Heights was originally settled by Native Americans and French fur traders. After the Dakota and the United States signed the Treaty of Mendota on the northeast side of Pilot Knob, all land west of the Mississippi River was available for settlement. The name ‘Mendota’ comes from the Dakota word for ‘meeting place of rivers’. In 1834, Henry Sibley arrived at the town trading post, and the settlement would never be the same. Sibley quickly constructed a home and a warehouse, and began hosting diplomats, writers, politicians and all sorts of notable guests. After becoming well-known in the area, Sibley was sent as a congressional delegate to the nation’s capital. In 1849, he returned with the Territory of Minnesota.
