Just over 40 years later, 41 of the town’s residents drafted and signed a petition to establish an independent township. Hopkins began to boom after the construction of the Minneapolis Threshing Machine Company, which produced farm machinery, in 1893. In the early 20thh century, the city was officially named Hopkins after Harley H. Hopkins, who was the town’s 1st homesteader and 1st postmaster. Harley Hopkins allowed a train depot to be built on his land under the condition that it bear the name ‘Hopkins’. Travelers assumed that based on the name of the depot, the town was also called Hopkins. The official name came as both an honor to Hopkins and an end to the confusion.
