Homes for sale in Farmington are near the bustling Twin Cities, but are also in their own cozy community sphere. Farmington is a town with spunk and personality!
Originally Dakota City, the town’s name comes from an old misunderstanding. The town train station was called Farmington Station, and travelers confused the name of the depot with that of the village so often that a few years later, the town gave in and renamed itself Farmington! The name Farmington comes from the multitude of farms spattered throughout the area. Once its name was settled, Farmington faced an uphill battle when it came to incorporation. Both the nearby town of Hastings and the governor himself fought tooth and nail to prevent Farmington from becoming its own town. Finally, once Governor William Marshall submitted his long-anticipated resignation, the village pushed through and became the City of Farmington. Shortly after, the town faced a brief economic and moral decline in the 1870’s. Local outspoken newspaper chief John Emery insisted that the city face the Truth about its situation, and the Farmington has been on the rise ever since.
