These lakes help keep Waconia green and lush, and as a result the town has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
The first settlers in the area arrived in the mid-19th century, traveling from New Orleans and up the Mississippi River, across the Minnesota River and then following Carver’s Creek to Burandt’s Lake. Soon, the town was incorporated as a village and was named for Lake Waconia. The lake’s name comes from the Dakota name ‘Meday Wa Ko Ni Ya’ which meant ‘Lake of the Fountains’ or ‘Lake of the Spring’. Waconia enjoyed lots of tourism between the late 1800s and early 1930s thanks to the lake’s Coney Island, which was generally referred to as ‘the paradise of the northwest’. In the interest of protecting the lake, Minnesota Attorney General Benson sued Waconia Creamery for polluting Lake Waconia in the 1930s in one of the country’s first environmental lawsuits. As a result, a 1986 report showed pollution levels lower than they were in the 1900s, and Lake Waconia continues to be one of Minnesota’s cleanest lakes!
