In 1850, Ramsey’s first settlers arrived on a powerful steamboat called The Governor Ramsey. Shortly after, Ramsey began its long lists of ‘firsts’, including the first school, the first breaking of land for farming and the first colony settled in Anoka County. While the township was officially organized in 1857, it wasn’t incorporated as a city until 1974. The Old Ramsey Town Hall still stands and is maintained today, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Anoka-Hennepin School District 11 and Elk River School District both serve owners of Ramsey real estate. The Anoka High School is one of the largest and oldest schools in Minnesota. It features a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) program and more than 45 college credit courses including AP, AVID, Honors and College in Schools. Elk River has elementary and middle school STEM magnet programs, and the district’s Elk River High School has 40 college credit courses and career courses in industrial technology, culinary arts, FACs and business.
