History

This area was first inhabited by the Dakota and Ojibwa, who appreciated Minnetonka’s lush forests and plentiful hunting and fishing. The name Minnetonka even comes from the Dakota term ‘mni tanka’, which means ‘great water’. In 1851, the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was signed, and the United States allowed eastern settlers to own land west of the Mississippi. Shortly after, Minnetonka real estate became home to a sawmill, flour mill and grist mill, with a booming furniture production industry. As these businesses flourished and faded, Minnetonka grew steadily until the 1970s. Since the mid-70s, the population of Minnetonka has more than doubled, thanks to high quality public works programs and convenient roadways.
