Mahtomedi means ‘White Bear Lake’ in the Dakota language, which makes perfect sense as part of the gorgeous White Bear Lake lies in town. Vadnais Heights, Hugo, Lino Lakes, North Oaks, North St. Paul, and of course White Bear Lake all border the city as well. Interstate Highway 694 and Mahtomedi Avenue help shuttle owners of homes for sale in Mahtomedi around town and these surrounding suburbs.
The humble town of Mahtomedi was first platted in 1883 by the First Mahtomedi Assembly of the Chautauqua Association. The group was founded in New York state to train Sunday school teachers, but quickly branched out, teaching and enriching the lives of residents in Mahtomedi and the surrounding area. Tent villages were built during every warm season, often with more than 3000 people in tents for the Assembly. In 1892, the railroad was extended through town, which also brought the Wildwood Amusement Park. The park included a roller coaster, traveling shows, pony diving, balloon ascents and the famous Giant Airplane Ride out over the water. In its heyday, the park would see 1000+ visitors daily, but Wildwood was forced to close in the 1930s due to the emergence of the Great Depression. However, the town remained in the public eye, as it famously hosted multiple notorious gangsters in the 1930’s, including Doc and Ma Barker, John Dillinger, “Baby Face” Nelson, “Bugs” Moran, and Gus Nichols.
This town features its own school district. Owners of Mahtomedi real estate are minutes away from Wildwood Elementary, Oscar Anderson Elementary, Mahtomedi Middle School and Mahtomedi High School. The area high school was named the #1 high school in Minnesota within the last 5 years! Saint Jude of the Lake School is in town, and is the only Catholic high school in the entire Midwest to offer an International Baccalaureate program!
